The 475th Fighter Group 'Satan's Angels' was formed May 14th 1943 as a P-38 group out of Queensland Australia. Comprised of the 431st, 432nd, and 433rd Fighter Squadrons, they began training as a long range escort group. Operating from several bases around the South Pacific the 475th quickly helped gain air superiority throughout the region.
Charles Lindbergh was brought in to teach extending the range of the P-38 through better fuel management. While flying on a mission July 28, 1944 he was credited with shooting down a KI-51 in an epic air battle involving P-38s flown by the best pilots in the Pacific Theater. Col. MacDonald would later remark that the KI-51 could out fly an entire squadron of P-38s, only to be shot down by Lindbergh.
America's second highest scoring Ace and Medal of Honor recipient, Major. Thomas McGuire was member of the 'Satan's Angels', wracking up a score of 39 confirmed victories. Major McGuire was tragically lost January 7th 1945 while in combat over Negros Island.
Over the course of nearly 3 years in combat the 475th accounted for 542 enemy aircraft destroyed in 3042 sorties. They lost 56 aircraft to combat with the Japanese. They flew from many bases throughout the South Pacific, several are shown on this page with links to Google Earth.
